Just as our relationships with people are unique, so are our relationships with companion animals. And anyone who considers a pet a family member, companion, or beloved friend, knows the loss of that unique pet carries a grief all its own. While the grief suffered by pet owners after the loss of a beloved pet can be as devastating as that experienced after the loss of a person, all too often, well-meaning friends and family members minimize and misunderstand this grief, and they may find it difficult to support the griever during the grief journey. For instance, they may quickly suggest getting another animal as a way to “replace” the beloved companion.
Hospice of San Angelo is honored to partner with Concho Valley PAWS (Pets are Worth Saving) to offer a three week support group specifically designed to deal with the grief that accompanies the loss of beloved animals. The group will provide a safe supportive environment where thoughts and emotions can be shared with others of similar circumstances, and it will be led by professional grief counselors who are also animal lovers.
Remember, your grief is real and deserves support.
